Back in 2019, when I was with the Lions Clubs International organising a pet adoption campaign, I remember suggesting to my teammate that we might not want to use the tagline “Adopt, Don’t Shop.” At the time, some of our fellow members were pet shop owners. As the Club President, I felt a responsibility to hold space for everyone, to ensure mutual respect within a volunteer-driven organisation where relationships matter just as much as the cause itself. Looking back, that decision reflected where I was then: balancing leadership, diplomacy, and inclusivity.

At the same time, as an individual, my personal stance has always been clear. I fully support encouraging people to adopt pets from shelters or rescue organisations rather than purchasing them from commercial breeders, pet stores, or online sellers, in the interest of animal welfare.

Commercial breeding facilities, particularly puppy mills, have long been criticised for prioritising profit over animal well-being. Choosing adoption helps support organisations that are dedicated to care, rehabilitation, and responsible rehoming, rather than contributing to systems where ethical standards may not always be upheld.

This perspective also resonates deeply with the philosophy of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, particularly the principle of Ahimsa, or non-harm towards all living beings.

Each year, millions of animals, including dogs, cats, and others, end up in shelters. Many have experienced abandonment, neglect, or trauma. Adoption offers not just a home, but a second chance at safety, trust, and care. It is also one way to help address the broader issue of pet overpopulation.

Understanding Beyond Stereotypes

Shelters are home to a wide diversity of animals. Different breeds, personalities, and stories. Adoption allows individuals to find a companion that aligns with their lifestyle, while also opening the door to unexpected connections. During my time in the United States, I became more aware of the stigma surrounding certain breeds, particularly pit bulls. Many of them are overlooked due to fear or misunderstanding, despite their capacity to be loving and loyal companions. It was encouraging to see organisations working to shift these perceptions, advocating for awareness, education, and second chances. [Reference Page]

This awareness eventually led to a more personal initiative.

“Beans,” an adopted pit bull mix, became the heart of this small charity project aimed at supporting animal welfare across different regions. With the support of a few friends, we launched the “Beans & Cooper” project in October 2023.

What began as a simple idea — sparked during a quiet, somewhat whimsical conversation under the moon about the legendary Jade Rabbit, which then grew into a creative storytelling concept. Beans and Cooper, two pets living in different parts of the world, became imagined “space agents” on a mission to help animals live free from suffering.

Through this project, we created a series of print-on-demand merchandise, such as the customisable pet pillows, bandanas, and other items, with all profits directed towards supporting certified animal welfare charities. Within two months, we raised and donated GBP500 (approximately USD650) to support a rescued dog named Lora from a shelter in Burgas, under the care of Animal Hope Burgas.

NOTE: The online store is currently unavailable, and the project has since come to a close.

A Continuing Journey

Looking back, this chapter represents more than an isolated project. It reflects a phase in my journey, one that began with external action and has gradually evolved into a deeper exploration of awareness, healing, and intentional living. Today, that path continues to unfold through yoga, creative practices, and inner work. While the form may change, the underlying intention remains the same: To live with greater compassion, presence, and responsibility - for all beings.
